Daniel Chase to Mary Kennedy, 2 April 1862
April 2th/62
Camp Disappointment Va.
Dear Sister
I am well at present and hope that this will find you the same. I recd your letter and was glad to hear from you. I suppose that you hear all the news there as well as we do here, in fact there has been nothing going on here for some time past worth speaking of. we have been here in this place for the last three weeks. it was just three / weeks ago to day that we came here just about 1½ miles from the camp that we staid in all winter we have been expecting to go from here every day since we stoped, but we have not gone. we were to go on a fleet to Fortress Monroe and from there I do not know where. The folks down here are commencing their springs work. some of them will have to make considerable fence for their farms are fenceless. the rails and stakes have been burnt up and the / boards have been carried off to make tables and benches for the soldiers to sit and eat on. you wanted to know where John was I cannot tell, exactly. the Elmira papers said that the company that he was in had started for washington, and saw in the daily Tribune the 103rd reg. Nyv. was to Anapolis in Maryland where they will probably go on board of a fleet. the regiment is mostly composed of Germans and has got 12 hundred men in the regiment.
Well, Mary I must stop pretty soon for I have got some beans on the fire cooking and I must see to them. the last letter that I had from William was wrote from the 5th (ult) he was to or on hilton head and was well. Fond and the rest of the boys were well. write when they you can and as much as you can. I shall have to write a few lines to George but I suppose that he may be so busy eating sugar that he will not be able to answer it. so good by this time
