Stony House. SC. Apr 9th 1862
Dear Brother and Sister,
I now take my pen in hand to write you a few lines once more to let you know that I am well as usual, and hope that this will find you the same. Well, we have got our pay again, two months pay, and I wish that you had what money I have got in my pocket now, between 9.00 and 10.00 dollars. I have been collecting money to send to H. Sherwood. you will find 30 dollars there for yourself. I got 34 dollars for two months pay. If we cant get a check to send, / we will have to send the money by express. the weather is the same as usual, only it gets warmer every day. we have moved out of our house into the tents again. I used to think that the gnats was pretty thick up there, in the spring, but there is ten to one down here, and the fleas, well, there is no use of talking. there use to be some around fathers old log barn, but they couldnt begin with what we have here. well, now I must stop for supper, fowler is cooking. well, now supper is over and I will try again. well I guess that you will hear of some fighting down this way / before long. General Hunter has taken all the troops but the guards from this Island, and gone down towards fort pulaski and Savannah, and we heard that he was going to take fort pulaski in a few days. there has been some pretty heavy firing down that way to day. we get another pair of shoes to day. we get a pair of shoes every three months. Mary, I have sent you two newspapers, illustrated papers, and I have wrote to the Editor to send my paper to Stony Fork.
We have got a club of 15 papers of the Evening Post, printed in New York City. My name will be on the papers.
Well, as it is getting late in the afternoon I will have to bring this to a close. tell george Chase to eat some warm sugar for me. I got five letters yesterday but none from delmar. three of them was from South Creek. the folks were all well. write as often as you can. direct as before.
this from your brother,
Wm. Chase.
