William Chase to Mary Kennedy and George W. Kennedy, 18 April 1862
Stonys Plantation. SC. Apr 18th/62
Dear Sister and Brother,
Yours of the 10th I rec'd to day and was glad to hear from you once more. You must not wait for my letters before you write, but write every week if you can, that is if you can get writing materials, and if you cant, write and let me know and I will send you some paper and envelopes. I guess that you will have money enough / in a few days to buy some writing materials for I have sent you 30 dollars more. we got our two months pay last week and I got together what the boys had to send to Wellsboro, and this week tuesday I went down to the fort at Hilton Head and got a draft of the Pay Master of 1,102 dollars and sent it to Henry Sherwood. Well, I had to stop just now to go out on dress parade. I dont see what the reason is you dont / get my letters for I write one every week. when I got the letter that George Chase wrote I had just wrote one the day before to you, and then I wrote one to George and you again. I got four letters to day, one from Wallace, Andrew Taylor, and one from Elijah and Lura Phillips. I have not heard from Dan since the Army of the Potomac moved. I have not heard from home since I wrote to you before. I have sent you two or three papers I suppose that you have heard about the fight down here at fort pulaski. we could see the shells burst from our quarters very plain. / after about 30 hours bombarding they run up the white flag. our loss was one man killed and two wounded, the rebels say that was their loss to, but our men have found 25 or 30 men burried in the fort. 383 surrendered as prisoners of war, and part of them have been sent north already. well, it is getting dark, and I must bring this to a close. now dont wait, but write often. I remain as ever,
your brother, Wm Chase,
So good night.
