Dear Friends.
Yours of the 15th and 18th May I rec'd in due time, and was very glad to hear from you once more. I rec'd yours last sunday one week ago to day, but had not time to write until to day, for we were loaded on a steamboat when we got the mail. we had started to go out on picket for one day and night, but we did not go back to camp again, for the next day the other part of our regt came along, and we went on towards Charlestown. we are now about 6 miles from / Charleston, at a place called Stone Inlet. our gun boats drove the rebels out of here last tuesday. there is five or six thousand men over on the other side of the Inlet. the Island on the other side of the Inlet goes up to Charleston. there is 15 or 20 000 rebels between here and Charleston. our gun boats are throwing shot and shell into them now pretty fast. they fairly shake the house. the rebels are leaving the Island, and our gun boats are helping them a little. I expect that we will be over on the other Island before long, for when we came here, we left every thing but our blankets behind and they have come on here, / but they are going to unload them on the other side. we had a little taste of soldier life coming over here from Edisto. we laid out on the ground two days and nights, and it rained about half the time, and we did not have anything to eat but crackers and water and not half enough of them. and then thursday when we came here, it rained all the forenoon hard. we are now quartered in a house. there is quite a small village here and the houses are about all occupied with troops. there is some rebel cavalry on this Island. our men have a skirmish with them about every day. they brought in 8 prisoners last night.

well I shall have to close, untill I get my writing materials, for I only borrowed a sheet of paper just to let you know that we were all well, and the next time I write I think that we will be in Charleston. tell Lovina that I wrote to her as soon as I recd hers. fowler has got a fit on and says that he is going to stop writing. he is well and on guard to day. write soon. direct as before. I send my love to all. this from your brother. Wm Chase,

so good by.
