Once more I find myself seated on a cracker box with my paper on my knee trying to write you a few lines to let you know that I am still in the land of the living, and hope this will find you the same. I have not wrote much lately for we have been moving about all the time and have done a little fighting this week to.

I think that I have two letters to answer now from you, of the 28th May, and the 4th of June. we are now about 6 miles from Charleston and I hope that we will be in the city before I write you another letter. We came over here last monday night, and I was put on guard, and about ten oclock Company I and Company H was called out on Picket duty. well the next day about five oclock the secesh come onto them / about five to one and thought they would drive them in, but they could not drive in the tioga boys. they were drawn up in line close to the edge of the woods, and as fast as the (grey backs) came in sight our men cut them down like stink weeds (as wal used to say) Our men have picked up and buried and brought in the wounded to the number of 150, while our loss was very small indeed, not more than twelve at the most. there was'nt a man hurt in our company Company H had one man wounded (since died), he was a Corporal (Thomas Job) by name. / we have to go out on picket within reach of a rebel battery, and they throw shells every day, trying to drive us out of the woods. night before last we were out, and the shells burst over our heads, and the pieces would come rattling down through the trees like hail stones. they are throwing them now, trying to drive our men out of the batteries that have been built lately. they are building one now right here by our camp. fowler was in the fight. he is well and has been all the time. so good by, write soon. direct as before. this from your brother Wm Chase
