Kind Friends,
Once more I sit down to write a few lines in answer to your kind letter of the 29th of June which I recd on the 15th of July and was very glad to hear from you again and that you were all well. I am well as usual but I dont like this hot weather. it keeps me sweating all the time but I think that we wont stay here long. Our Col. got a dispatch last night for to go north. the Col has gone to the Generals Head Quarters this morning to see about it. I think that we will go to Va if we go anywhere north.

I got a letter from Charles C. Thompson this week he is in the same Regt that Daniel is. he said that Dan was well. he said that Dan was as long as a rail. he said that dan made a bully soldier you can write to him any time. I have sent you the directions a good many times. Washington, DC, Company F. 23rd Regt N.Y. Vol.

I have wrote two letters to John but have not had an answer. I had not heard that he was dead until I got your letter. Well, I must stop now and make out the morning report.

Well, you see when I got the morning report made out the order / came to pack up things and strike tents and be ready to start, so you see I had to leave off my writing until to day. we went on board of the steamship Aragon last friday, the 18th and we came into the harbor at fortress Monroe on Sunday night. we lay there until the next morning when we went on board of another small steamer and went up to the wharf and landed at newport news (last night) and marched out here to camp. our tents have not come yet. we fixed up our gum blankets last night, and made tents of them, and I am sitting under one now writing. I went out on the bank of the river this morning and the river was covered with ships and schooners going up the river. /

Well, I must draw this to a close. write as often as you can. direct to Fortress Monroe Va. So no more this time. this from your brother Wm Chase.

to G. W. & M. Kennedy

PS. you will find 25 dol. at the baker for you. we got our two months pay last week.

I think that you had better direct to Newport News, Va.
