Dear Sister
I recd yours of the 3rd Oc't this forenoon, and as there is nothing to do I thought I would try and write a few lines and let you how I and the rest of the "Shucks" of South Creek are getting along. I am well and so is John & Art. Art has been sick for a few days with the jaundice but he is so he is on duty now the rest of the boys from the creek are well. I recd a letter from David / on the 3rd inst. he said that Wallis had run his hand through a shinglemachine so that he could not write. Nancy had been dangerously sick with a fever but was a gaining some at the time he wrote. I am glad to hear that William is able to write. I had not heard from him since those hard fought battles only I had seen his name in the paper as wounded. Frederick city is about 20 miles from here. it is a pretty little place. I came through there when we came here.

One of our Company that was wounded in the late battle had his leg amputated near the hip and has since died. he was a nephew of Wm Goldsmith of South Creek. he has got a brother here in our Comp. Their father came here but was two or three days to late, but he had the satisfaction of knowing that he died like a brave man. Mary, I want you to write back when you can and let me know how all the folks are / getting along, and be sure and say something about Aunt Azy's folks and also Aunt Betsy, but I must stop for this time for it is getting late it is quite cold here to day. last night was a cold stormy night. I do not know whether there will be any more fighting here or not this winter, at least I hope not, for I have seen enough of fighting, but our time is out next may and that time will soon come. but good by for this time.
