Camp Opposite Fredericksburg. Va
Dec 26th 1862.
Kind Friends,
Yours of the 4th I recd to day. this morning when I came in to camp the mail had to come in and I found your letter waiting for me. We were out on Picket yesterday to spend our Christmas. I went out with our Co. the Capt and 2nd Lieut staid in camp. I was down on the river bank / and the rebel Pickets were on the other side of the river. well, we had not been there long before the boys were talking to one another across the river, and pretty soon one of the grey backs got into the boat and came over on our side. he was a very smart young man. he was from S.C. he said he wished that we might meet some time after the war was over where we could be our own boss. he was just as friendly as any man would be / up there, where there is no fighting going on every other day. they are all sick of the war, and wish it was over, and to tell the plain truth, I wish it was to.
Mary, I have told you times enough to direct to Washington, D.C. for any where in Virginia. I wrote you a letter about ten days ago and put $20 dollars in it. I have not seen Daniel lately. I had a letter from Wallace this week. he is at Phillipsburg Centre Co, Penna. he is well and to work in a saw mill.
I am very much obliged to you / for the stamps you sent, and if it would not be be to much trouble for you, you may send me some more. so I must close. I would like to be there to go to school this winter. I send you a one dollar bill, secesh money. please keep it for me. write soon. this from your Brother Lieut Wm Chase.
