Hoxey C. Rogers
Hoxey C. Rogers was born on April 18, 1842, in Vermont, to Joseph and Ann Rogers. His father died around 1853. By the early 1860s, he was living in Mount Holly, Vermont. He enlisted in the Union army on May 7, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company I of the 2nd Vermont Infantry on June 20. The regiment took part in the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and the Battle of Cold Harbor.

He was shot in the right leg at some point during the war, but he eventually recovered and rejoined his regiment. He was promoted to corporal on August 4, 1864, and then to sergeant on November 7, 1864. He mustered out in Washington, D.C., on July 15, 1865.

Rogers returned to Vermont after the war, and he married Teresa Emory there on August 11, 1865. They had at least nine children: Ulysses S. Grant, born around 1868; Orrie, born around 1870; Rebecca, born around 1873; Helen, born around 1875; Euphemia, born around 1876; Hoxey, born around 1878; Elliott, born around 1883; Seneca, born around 1885; and Mary, born around 1890.

They moved to Denver, Michigan, around 1868. By 1870, Rogers was working as a carpenter, and he owned $150 of personal property. The family may have moved to New Hampshire in the 1870s, and by 1880, they were living in Westminster, Vermont. They moved to Hillsborough, New Hampshire, in the 1880s. He applied for a federal pension in November 1888 and eventually secured one.

By 1900, Rogers was working as a farmer in Walpole, New Hampshire, and a decade later, he was working as a day laborer. The family moved to Troy, New Hampshire, sometime in the 1910s. He died there of “chronic nephritis” on June 27, 1929.
