Newport News. Va. Feb 20th, 1863.
Dear Brother & Sister,
Again I find myself seated to write you a few lines in answer to your kind letter of the 8th & 10th which came to hand in due time, but as it had not been long since I wrote to you, I thought that I would write David first, for I had not wrote to him since I have been here till today.
We have some visitors here now from Tioga County, Esq. Emery, Eli Farr, and a Doct. Borden from Tioga. the two latter have gone on to Suffolk, but the Esq. is here yet. I think he will stay till Monday next. Capt Hills came back to the Regt on the 16th and he has been on duty two days running since, as Officer of the day, and today he is alone with the company. I am detailed to take charge of Company H and the 2nd Lieut, C. M. Hart, is Officer of the guard today. today is about the best weather that we have had since we have / been here. it has rained all the time till today it has cleared off, and the sun shines. And there is an inspection ordered for three oclock, and it is now about two, so I cant write a very long letter this time. I have been writing some to Noble this time.
George, if it wont be to much trouble, I would like to have some more stamps. we have now about four months pay due us again, and our money is about all gone, but I will send you a one dollar bill and you can send me some stamps when you can.
I will also send you a likeness of our Col. Thomas Welsh. show it to M. D. Wilson, but dont tell him who it is and see if he will know it
so no more at present. write soon. this from your Brother,
Lieut Wm Chase,
Newport News, Va.
