William Chase to George W. Kennedy and Mary Kennedy, 26 March 1863
Newport News, Va.
March 26th 1863.

Dear Brother & Sister,
Once more I sit down to write you a few lines to let you see that I am yet alive and well. it is now about two weeks since I have wrote to you. I have been waiting for a letter from you, but none has come yet, so as we are just on the point of another move, I thought I would drop you a few lines. you had better wait till you hear from me again before you write. we are coming up to Baltimore and there we will take the cars, and I think we will go west, probably to Tennessee. / We are to be under General Burnside once more. the 9th Army Corps goes from here, and I think he will have a larger command than this Corps.

it has snowed here all day and yesterday it rained and snowed both. the snow is about six inches deep and snows yet. The original of that photograph I sent you is now a Brigadier General, Capt Hills will be Lieut Col. but I wont anticipate. it will come soon enough. I got a letter from david today. he said the folks were all well. supper is ready and I will have to eat now.

well, supper is over. maybe you would like to know what we have to eat. well I will tell you / we have potatoes and ham, wheat pancakes and molasses, coffee without milk, cheese, apple sauce, rice, bread, beans and other things too numerous to mention, but the paymaster has not been around yet.

Mary, seeing that you took such an interest in the Original, I thought I would send you another Photograph dont show it to everybody and please return it to me soon. you will see where she is, on the back of the picture. so I must close. my love to all.

from your Brother,
Lieut Wm Chase.
