William Chase to Mary Kennedy, 20 April 1863
Camp Dick Robinson, Ky.
April 20th 1863.

Dear Sister,
Yours of the 12th has just come to hand. it is the first letter that I have had from you since we left Newport News. I have wrote you two letters since we have been in this state.

I suppose that you have recd the one that I sent after I sent that money to father for you. 350 dollars, by Express. We have been out on a review this afternoon. We were reviewed by General Welsh and Staff, four Regts and two Batteries of Artillery. there were several Ladies present, two of them were from Tioga Co Penna, two Lieuts wives in our Regt, Haynes and Jeffers of Co G. they have been here about a week. they are staying at Mrs Robinsons, the mans wife that this camp is named after. she is a very nice woman, a strong union woman to.

Well, it is now half past 9 oclock, P.M. My bedfellow Lieut Hart has just made up the bed, and layed himself down and Col Hills is about going to bed, so I will try and write a little more now. When I begun this letter, I wrote till dark, then laid it one side till now. some of the boys of my Company have drawn up a paper, and have got about every man in the Company to put his name to it, and they are going to hand it to Col Curtin. it is to have me (or rather a request) that I should be commissioned Capt of Company I, 45th Pa. Vols. Col Hills has approved it, if that should happen to come to pass, what would M. D. Wilson say. he would wish that he was a member of Company I once more. I wrote him a letter yesterday. you tell George to pay for his farm. if I can send him money enough I will send him some more next pay day, if he wants any. if I get to be Capt. I shall get about twenty dollars more a month, and it wont cost me any more to live. /

Well, what does Aunt Achsah say about her son in law, Dickinson. does she sputter much about it. tell her for me to get Dick drafted into the Army. then you think that I will be after taking one of these Kentuck girls do you. well, I think I could marry a pretty good farm here without any trouble at all, for there some of the cleverest folks here in this state that I ever saw. but, what do I want of a woman. please send me that picture, for I want to look at it once in a while, but she writes a pretty hard letter. she is down on Old Abe and his administration. So I will close by asking you to write soon, and all the news. My love to all. I remain as ever your Brother, Lieut Wm Chase,
