William Chase to George W. Kennedy and Mary Kennedy, 3 May 1863
Middleburg, Kentucky.
May 3rd 1863.
Brother and Sister,
Once more I sit down for the purpose of writing you a few lines in answer to yours of the 21st ult. which was recd in due time. but I have not had time to write till now, for I recd yours just as I was getting ready to go to a ball, and then the next day I was on Picket, and I was called in before daylight, to get ready to start on a march. we started about 7 oclock the 30th day of April, and yesterday and day before, / we laid still all the forenoon and today is sunday and a rainy day to. I think we will lay still today. we are now on the Green River. we are going south west, down to Columbia, and may be we will go on down into Tennessee.
I would like to know where and how the folks up in that country get their news. they know everything that happens here before we do, and some things that never have happened, one thing any way. that is calling me Capt. I have not the honor to use that handle yet, and dont know as I ever shall. I had a very nice sword and belt presented to me / last night by the Company. it cost about 25 dollars. I had a letter from Dan yesterday wrote the 26th of April. he said that he had but 21 days more to stay and that I could direct the next letter home to him. I have sent a likeness to south Creek and one to Jane. I have got one with me now that I will send to you, but they are not good pictures. so I will close by asking you to write soon. direct as before. from your Brother Lieut Wm Chase.
To G. W. & M. K.
