William Chase to George W. Kennedy and Mary Kennedy, 21 August 1863
Camp Near Nicholasville, Ky.
August 21st 1863.

Brother and Sister,
I now once more find myself seated for the purpose of writing you a few lines in answer to yours of the 2nd of this month, which I recd sometime ago, but could not answer it til now, for I have been under the weather for the last two weeks. I had the fever when we were coming up the river from Vicksburg, so you see I had to take some quinine. I am nearly well again now. I had a letter from David this week, he said that Wesley Hurlbut and his wife had been out to Penna to see the folks. Dave wrote that Dan and John Inman had enlisted in the Army again, but they had went into Cavalry this time, Company A, 16th N.Y. light Cavalry. they get a bounty of 552 dollars, that is a pile of money for Uncle Sam to pay for soldiers. that will tempt a good many old soldiers to reenlist.

we are now encamped in a very nice place in a grove about four miles from the Railroad at Nicholasville. I think that we will lay still here some time and let our men get rested, and recruit up a little, for our trip down in Miss just about used us up. we never had so many sick before at one time as we have now. we have a plenty here now of every thing in the line of fruit and vegetables. You must take good care of photograph of Col Welsh for he is no more, he died in Cincinnati on the 14th of this month. he was taken sick coming up the river and died the very day that he arrived at Cinn. his remains were sent home the next day to Columbia, lancaster County, Penna.

so I must close by asking you to write soon. My love to all. direct as before. via of Cinn, O.

            so goodby from your Brother
            Capt Wm Chase,
            To G. W. & M. K.
