William Chase to Mary Kennedy, 13 October 1863
Camp Near Knoxville, Tenn.
Oct 13th, 1863.

Sister Mary,
Once more I find myself seated for the purpose of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well and may this find you the same. on the 30th day of last month I left Crab Orchard in Ky, and arrived here yesterday, being 13 days on the road, but I was on horseback. I came through with a train of wagons. the Regt is about 60 miles from here, up the Railroad, towards Virginia. I am going up where the Regt is tomorrow. I did calculate to go today, but it is raining today, so I thought that I would wait till tomorrow. our Regt has been in a fight again but Company I escaped without a scratch this time. that was because I was not there to get hit again. our loss was light as far as I have heard yet, / I have not learned the particulars yet. I saw some of the wounded here in the city yesterday. the 45th was put in the front, as usual, and the rebs could not hold their ground.

But of all the rough country that I ever saw, lies between here and Lexington, Ky. dead horses and mules and broken down wagons are scattered all along the road, and Cumberland Gap takes them all down. there it takes two men and a boy to see the top of the mountain. the Gap is a notch of about three hundred feet in width, as if cut right through the mountain, but there is a mile of pretty steep hill to climb to go through the Gap.

Well, I shall have to close and after I have seen the Regt I will write the particulars.

direct as before, via of Cinn, O.

from your Brother
Capt Wm Chase.
