Daniel Chase to Mary Kennedy, 3 November 1863
Camp Stoneman Nov 3rd/63

My Dear Sister
I now take this opportunity to let you know that I am well at present and hope that these few lines will find you the same. It has been so long since I heard from you that I begin to think that you have forgotten that there ever was a person like me. I think that this will let you know that I am still in the land of the "living" although far away.

Mary I have been here / two weeks, and have not heard from home and no where else and I think that it is almost time that I heard from somewhere. We are having pleasant times here. we have not got any horses yet and I do not know when we will get any.

There is prospects of our staying here in this vicinity all winter. there is some talk of our having Barracks to stay in.

I suppose that you would like to know where I am, and I will say that we are on the south side of the East branch of the Potomac River and about 5 miles from Washington. Cousin John is here in the same tent with me / he is as well as common. Arty has come in, he is to work not far from here for "Uncle Sam" for $50.00 per month.

I have not heard from Wallace since I left Geneva. I was home two weeks ago yesterday the folks were all well as common Father had started for Middleburg so I did not see him. Mary you must write when you get this you must write best as you can and let me know how all the folks are getting along "all of them".

You must tell me when you heard from William last. I have not heard from him in a good while.

Well I must stop for this time for it it is getting dark and I am on Guard, so good

Bye
Daniel
