April 13th 1864.
Dear Sister & Brother
I now seat myself for the purpose of writing you a few lines in answer to your letter of the 3rd, which I rec'd today, and I was very glad to hear from you after so long a time, and that you were all well, and I hope this will find you the same.
I am just about the same as when I wrote you before. I am on the sick list yet. I have been on Dress Parade one evening since I came from home.
I have had a gathering in my head and it discharges out of my right ear.
We have had very bad weather here ever since we have been here. it has rained and snowed about all the time. there are a good many sick here now with the measles, and quite a number have died. I have lost three men out of my Company, two of them were new recruits, and one of them was one of the old men. one of them was buried here and the other two were sent home. one of them lived down on pine Creek. his name was Ranceford Campbell. I sent his cousin, Darius Kriner home with his corpse. he will come to Wellsboro. the other one lived in Potter County, his name was Rook Wilkinson. I sent his brother home with him. / The last named started today, the former started yesterday.
I had a letter from Wallace that was wrote two days after yours was, and I rec'd it three days ago. yours must have lain in the Office about a week, for it was not mailed till the 9th at Stoney Fork.
Wallace wrote that Esthers baby was very sick, they did not expect it to live.
Today we were (I say we) that is all the troops here, were reviewed by Lieutenant General Grant. Old Birney was with him, and two other Generals.
I had a visitor just now and I had to stop writing and have a little chat with him. it was my next door neighbor, Capt Fessler, of Company K.
Fowler says that he is very sorry that every body should have the mumps just because he did.
Well, as it is now half past ten P.M. and I am all alone, I will have to close. There is a circus here in town for a few days, and Dewitt has gone down to see what the poney does at the circus. so I will wish you a good night, hoping to hear from you soon. I remain as ever,
Your Brother,
Capt Wm Chase.
P.S. When you write again leave off the Brigade and Division.
