July 12th 1864

Dear Sister,
Mary once more I seat myself for the purpose of writing you a few lines, thinking that probably you would like to hear from me once more. I left home on the 4th of this month and arrived at the Hospital in Georgetown on the 5th, and on the 7th was ordered to report at Annapolis, Md for examination, and I arrived here about 7 P.M. that day.

My wound has about healed up but I cant use my arm, for it is stiff in the shoulder joint, and some times I think that it will always be so, but I hope not.

there is considerable excitement here this morning about the Rebel Raiders. it is reported here that they are between here and the Junction. the train started out this morning but had to come back again. / Every body has gone out this morning that was able to go. All the Officers that were able to volunteered, and have gone out to help defend the place. I could not go, so I lent my sword and belt to an Officer that could. Men were out all night digging rifle pits.

Well as the mail cannot leave here till this evening or tomorrow, I will wait untill this afternoon, and see what will turn up by that time.

8 oclock P.M.
I will now try to write a little more. that was a mistake about the train having to come back this morning, for it run clear through. We had papers this morning from Washington and Baltimore both. the Rebs have cut the telegraph and Railroad between Baltimore and Harrisburg and Baltimore and Philadelphia, and tonight it is reported that they have cut the road between here and Washington. there is something the matter for we have not had any papers this evening.

Mary, I cannot write anything about the men in the Company, for I have not heard from them since I was wounded. I did not know that Lieut Haig was dead till last week.

Mary, tell George that I left some money with Father for him, $400. any time that he can go out there, he can get it and use it as he thinks best.

Well, I must close for this time. please write soon, and all the news, how does Nancy get along out there. I remain as ever your
