Dear Sister,
Mary I have waited now almost a month for a letter from you, but have waited in vain so I have made up my mind to write once more, and see what was the reason you did not write to me. I wrote from Annapolis, Md. to George to let him know that I had sent three hundred dollars to father for him. I dont know whether he has got the money yet or not. David wrote that father got it from the Express office at Elmira, but did not say what he had done with it. I suppose you think it rather strange that I should be away down here, / I have been here about a month, on Court Martial duty. I dont know how long I shall stay here, probably not long though for we are out of business now and waiting for orders. Well, as it is time now for the Court to meet I will have to adjourn awhile.
the Court met at 10 oclock A.M. but as we had no business to do we adjourned until tomorrow morning 10 oclock. there is a horse race today at the fair grounds. I think I will go if I can find anybody to go with me. (a lady, I mean). this place is noted for pretty girls. they take quite a fancy to brass buttons and shoulder straps.
Mary, I suppose David has sent you that photograph, the group of four cousins. I told him to send you one and Jane one.
So I shall have to close,
My arm is lame yet, and I think it always will be.
hoping to hear from you some time, I remain as ever,
Your Brother,
Wm Chase,
Capt 45th Pa Vols.
P.S. wait till you hear from me again.
Wm Chase.
