Dear Doctor
I recd your letter a few days since, but been so much so much pressed with the most disagreeable work that I have been unable to notice it sooner. Am glad to hear you are so pleasantly situated. You are with a fine regt. with a nice loveable gentleman as Col. I showed your letter to Dr Bailey as directed but have not spoken him since he read it. I agree with the Surgn Genl in thinking some misrepresentations had made him in reference to your case & did not hesitate to single out Walker as the person so misrepresenting.

We had a little excitement the other day. A party of yankees (200 strong Cavalry) made a charge on a strong position occupied by the S. Shooters & two pieces of artillery. Were repulsed with a loss (as stated by citizens on the other side of the river) of from 50, 60 all told. They left one dead. five horses killed, 1 Lt & 9 men prisoners. Our loss—none killed or wounded one Cavalry Lt taken prisoner.

I send you a letter handed me yesterday, none others have recd. I have hard work before me for months. I am much pleased & gratified with the reception given me & the support of the Officers in my ideas of discipline. I intend the first in name shall be [?] [paper hole] active service 6 months longer). the first in rep[paper hole] from [paper hole] rolina.

Yours truly
F.W.Kil
