Franklin Whitner Kilpatrick
Franklin Whitner Kilpatrick was born on September 30, 1837, in South Carolina. He grew up and attended school in Pendleton, South Carolina, before enrolling at the University of Virginia in 1855. He studied mathematics, modern languages, and moral philosophy. He was apparently an indifferent student, and he was frequently absent from his classes. He withdrew from the university in June 1857 and enrolled at the University of Georgia. By 1860, he was working as a farmer in Pickens District, South Carolina, and he owned $18,600 of real estate and $55,000 of personal property.

In early 1861, he received a commission as a captain in Company K of the 4th South Carolina Infantry. He was wounded in the hand during the First Battle of Bull Run, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. In 1862, his company became part of the Palmetto Sharpshooters, and he received a promotion to major. The regiment took part in the Peninsula campaign, the Seven Days’ Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg.

In January 1863, he was promoted to colonel of the 1st South Carolina Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was killed in the Battle of Wauhatchie on October 29, 1863.
