Frederick E. Ranger
Frederick E. Ranger was born around 1832 in Glens Falls, New York, to Samuel Ranger and Caroline Payne. Her father was a farmer who owned $14,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property in 1860. Ranger grew up and attended school in Glens Falls before beginning work as a bookstore merchant. He married Agnes Evens around 1857, and they had at least four children: Florence, born around 1858; Caroline, born around 1860; Gertrude, born around 1862; and William, born around 1864. He enlisted in the Union army on May 7, 1861, and mustered in as a 2nd lieutenant in Company F of the 22nd New York Infantry on June 6. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with black hair and black eyes.
 
The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Chancellorsville. Ranger was promoted to 1st lieutenant on August 18, 1862, and then to captain on November 5, 1862. He mustered out in Albany, New York, on June 19, 1863. Ranger returned to Glens Falls after leaving the army, and by 1870, he was working as a lawyer. He remained in Glens Falls for the rest of his life. He applied for a federal pension in June 1888 and secured one soon afterward, but he died in Glens Falls on November 17, 1888.
