Esther D. Bowen (maiden name: Craig) was born around 1814 in Tennessee. She married William Bowen on February 4, 1833, and they had at least seven children: Mary, born around 1834; Sarah, born around 1837; William, born around 1839; Julie, born around 1841; M.R., born around 1844; A. P., born around 1848; and Moses, born around 1853. They lived in Dyer County, Tennessee, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $500 of real estate. They moved to Hopkins County, Texas, in the 1850s, and her husband died sometime before September 1860. She worked as a farmer, and by 1860, she owned $1,000 of real estate and $700 of personal property. A decade later, she owned $1,600 of personal property. She died sometime after 1880.
