Enoch J. Ames
Enoch J. Ames was born around 1821 in Maine. He married Judith G. Caswell on September 15, 1844, and they had at least four children: Georgiana, born around 1846; Effie, born around 1853; Eliza, born around 1857; and Enoch, born around 1867. They lived in Exeter, Maine, and he earned a living as a blacksmith. By 1860, he owned $300 of real estate and $515 of personal property.

He enlisted in the Union army, and he mustered in as a farrier in Company L of the 2nd Maine Cavalry on December 24, 1863. The regiment was deployed to the Department of the Gulf, and they spent the final months of the war in Barrancas, Florida. He mustered out on December 6, 1865.

He returned to Exter after the war and resumed his work as a blacksmith. By 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property. In December 1872, he received an appointment as a local postmaster. His wife probably died in the 1880s, and he married a woman named Phoebe around 1888. He applied for a federal pension in February 1887 and eventually received one. He moved to Stetson, Maine, in the late 1800s, and he died there of heart disease on February 28, 1903.
