Henry C. Kern was born on March 1, 1838, in Ohio to Samuel and Sophia Kern. His father was a farmer and wagon maker who owned $3,000 of real estate and $700 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Sugar Creek, Ohio, until the 1850s, when they moved to St. Marys, Ohio. By 1860, he was working as a farm laborer.
He married Catherine Shell on December 26, 1860, and they had at least seven children: John, born around 1862; Saloma, born around 1863; William, born around 1865; Oliver, born around 1867; Samuel, born around 1869; Olen, born around 1874; and Maude, born around 1877. They lived in St. Marys, and he worked as a wagon maker. By 1870, he owned $1,200 of real estate and $200 of personal property. They moved to Ontwa, Michigan, in the 1870s, and by 1900, they were living in Harris, Indiana. He died of dropsy in Elkhart, Indiana, on August 27, 1903.
