John Howe
John Howe was born around 1836. By the early 1860s, he was probably living in New York. He enlisted in the Union army on May 7, 1861, and he mustered in as a surgeon’s mate in the 1st New York Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was promoted to assistant surgeon in July 1861 and then to surgeon in November 1861. He mustered out on May 25, 1863, and he died sometime afterward.
