Owen Libby
Owen Libby was born around 1845 in Maine to Ebenezer Libby. His father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate and $350 of personal property. He grew up and attended school in Lebanon, Maine. He staunchly supported the Union war effort during the Civil War, informing a friend that “old Jeff Davis and his government has got to be crushed…stand by the union as long as the union stands and if the union falls let us all fall with the union.” He married Lucy Guptill around 1870, and they had at least two children: Clifton, born around 1871; and Cecil, born around 1873. They lived in Lebanon, and Libby worked as a day laborer. He died of diabetes in Springvale, Maine, on March 21, 1913.
