Owen Libby to David H. Brackett, 12 May 1863
Lebanon          May the 12. 1863.
Mr Brackett                                                    Dear Friend.

Dear Sir. I received your letter this day just 15 minuts before 4 oclock and was very happy to hear from you and I thought that you had fogotten me, as I have received no letter from you since January. Well David dont feel discouraged old Jeff Davis and his government has got to be crushed. And it now becomes necessary for me to remark that people this way begin to feel very much hardened against Mr Davis and his government. And I think that it is time to rail against one such mean and most degraded of all God’s race. David it is a remarkable fact things look rather dull at the present time and no doubt but it they will untill Jeff Davis is used up as he most certainly will be. But have faith to believe that you are fighting in a good cause. And so you are. But dont forget to come home as soon as you can. But stand by the union as long as long as the union stands and if the union falls let us all fall with the union./

Gen Hooker has had a terible battle at Fredericksburgh wich resulted in a terible slaughter in the New England Regiments John Libby is killed and Elijah Tibbetts is wounded of Lebanon.              Washington Garvell has been brought home and buried. he died on Long Island New York Dec 25 1862. Ah this is a terible war and was caused by the southern traitors. And if they could receive their just reward it must be death. I take the liberty to send you this table how to tell the age of another. This table consist of six columns of figures if you wish to know the age of another hand to him the table and ask that he select and name the column in which his age is found having done this as requested you simply add together the figures at the top of the columns in which the age is found and you have the result Thus suppose the age of a person be 21 he will then say my age is found in columns No one three and 5. Now add together the figures one 4 and sixteen at the top of those columns and you have the result.                 Yours truely
