Joseph H. Nevitt was born around 1836 in Pennsylvania to Thomas Nevitt and Eve Earnest. His father was a laborer. Nevitt probably grew up and attended school in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Iowa in the 1850s, and he married Lucinda Lyman there on October 6, 1858. They had at least three children: Sarah, born around 1859; Florence, born around 1861; and Julia, born around 1870. They lived in Grandview, Iowa, and Nevitt worked as a shoemaker. By 1860, he owned $250 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on August 14, 1862, and mustered in as a private in Company F of the 35th Iowa Infantry on September 4. The regiment took part in the Siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Nashville. He mustered out in Davenport, Iowa, on August 10, 1865. He returned to Grandview after the war, and by 1870, he owned $1,680 of real estate and $1,458 of personal property. He died in Iowa on April 24, 1871.
