William Jackman was born around 1822 in Maine. He married Nancy Heald in the 1840s, and they had at least six children: Helen, born around 1848; William, born around 1850; Alphonso, born around 1843; Bertha, born around 1855; Henrietta, born around 1859; and Gemma, born around 1861. Jackman worked as a carpenter and merchant in Patten, Maine. He owned $1,200 of real estate in 1850, and a decade later, he owned $3,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Union army on December 26, 1861, and mustered in as a sergeant in Company I of the 14th Maine Infantry later that day. He was promoted to sergeant major on February 10, 1862; to 2nd lieutenant on June 15, 1862; and then to 1st lieutenant on January 9, 1863. The regiment took part in the siege of Port Hudson and performed garrison in Louisiana until July 1864. The army transferred the men to Virginia that summer, and they participated in General Philip Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley campaign. He died in the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864.
