Nancy Jackman (maiden name: Heald) was born around 1822 in Sumner, Maine, to Israel Heald and Jane Standish. Her father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate by 1850. She married William Jackman in the 1840s, and they had at least six children: Helen, born around 1848; William, born around 1850; Alphonso, born around 1843; Bertha, born around 1855; Henrietta, born around 1859; and Gemma, born around 1861.
They lived in Patten, Maine, and her husband worked as a carpenter and merchant. They owned $1,200 of real estate in 1850, and a decade later, they owned $3,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property. William enlisted in the Union army in December 1861 and died in the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864. She applied for a widow’s pension in May 1865 and eventually secured one. She remained in Patten after the war, and by 1870, she owned $1,000 of real estate. By 1890, she was living in Gorham, Maine. She died there on December 12, 1892.
