William Swanson was born around 1797 in Scotland to John and Janet Swanson. He married Margaret Lambie, and they had at least five children: Isabella, born around 1824; George, born around 1826; Margaret, born around 1827; John, born around 1833; and James, born around 1836. They immigrated to America in 1828 aboard the Elizabeth and Mary and settled in Camden, New York. Swanson worked as a farmer there, and by 1850, he owned $1,000 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $600 of real estate and $240 of personal property. By 1870, he was working in a sawmill in Camden, and he owned $150 of personal property. His wife died around 1872. He was admitted to the Oneida County Poor House on November 26, 1877, and by 1880, he was living in his son John’s household in Camden. He died there in 1883.
