John Buroway was born around 1843 in Ohio to Isaac and Mary Buroway. His father was a farmer who owned $3,360 of real estate and $775 of personal property. He grew up and attended school in Sugar Creek, Ohio, and by 1870, he was working as a farm laborer. He married Savilla Nichols there on September 18, 1870, and they had at least two children: Chloe, born around 1874; and Viva, born around 1879. Buroway worked as a teamster and watchman. They moved to Canton, Ohio, in the late 1800s, and his wife died there in 1915. By 1920, he was living in his daughter Viva’s household in Canton. He died there in 1926.
