George M. Whipple to Mehitable P. Wheeler, 3 August 1864
Salem August 3 1864
My dear Mrs Wheeler
I have a sad pleasure in forwarding you the enclosed papers, expressing the sympathy of the Officers of the 23d Regiment in your late bereavement, and their regret at the loss of their late associate from their midst.
I know from personal experience how much Richard was beloved and respected by the Officers and men of the Regiment, and I know too that these simple words come right from their hearts.
Will you please hand the Resolutions to Miss Fellons who will I am sure prize this voluntary testimonial from Richards friends.
I am Madam
Yrs very truly
Geo M Whipple
