Ella M. Coleman (maiden name: Alexander) was born around 1834 in Virginia to Nathaniel and Sarah Alexander. Her father was a farmer who owned $20,120 of real estate in 1850. She grew in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and she married Henry E. Coleman around 1853. They had at least five children: Thomas, born around 1854; Nathaniel, born around 1856; Henry, born around 1862; Sarah, born around 1866; and Charles, born around 1875. They lived in Mecklenburg County, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1860, they owned $15,000 of real estate and $35,000 of personal property. A decade later, they owned $25,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. She died of “diarrhea” in Mecklenburg County on May 20, 1884.
