Charles Alexander to Ella M. Coleman, 18 July 1863
Winchester July 18.63
My Dear Sister—Your very sweet, and to me very interesting letter, reached me two days ago. I will reply to it some two or three days from now when I hope to feel more life and spirits. at present I scarcely feel that I have an idea in my head.
Cheer up my dear sister, the “crown of glory” of which you speak worn by our sweet children in Heaven should not make us grieve, we are disappointed—we are selfish. In addition to our natural affection for them we loved them because they gave us pleasure. Really my sister this world is filled with meanness and sin and I believe that the child is favored who is taken to Heaven. I would not grieve were I not selfish but such is that selfishness that I can see no peace and whilst I see “strange faces and hear strange voices” yet / the features of the dear ones which we have lost live and at all times have a being in my imagination.
I do wish so much that I could get with the active part of the army that I might lighten my heart.
At present good-bye
Yours fondly
C Alexander
