Harriet Holmes (maiden name: Campbell) was born on March 9, 1812, in Kentucky to William Campbell and Margaret Reed. Her family moved to Wayne, Ohio, sometime before 1820, and she grew up there. She married Hugh F. Holmes on December 29, 1831, and they had at least nine children: Sarah, born around 1832; William C., born on September 15, 1834; Margaret, born around 1837; John, born around 1839; James, born around 1842; Mary E., born around 1844; Martha, born around 1848; Harriet, born around 1850; and Charles, born around 1854. Her husband worked as a farmer.
They moved to Richland, Indiana, around 1838; to Wayne, Ohio, in the late 1840s; and to Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1850s. By 1860, they owned $800 of real estate and $775 of personal property. They moved to Jackson, Iowa, in the 1860s, and by 1870, they owned $3,000 of real estate and $1,290 of personal property. Her husband died on June 12, 1881, and by 1900, she was living in Union, Iowa, with her daughter Margaret. She died in Iowa on August 10, 1903.
