Marietta Hester Grigg was born on January 23, 1861, in Meltonsville, Alabama, to Christopher Grigg and Elizabeth S. Beam. His father was a teacher. She grew up in Marshall County, Alabama, and she married Jasper N. Matheny there on January 12, 1882. They had at least four children: Ernest, born around 1886; Burton, born around 1890; Hester, born around 1892; and Chester, born around 1892. They lived in Wakefield, Alabama, and her husband worked as a farmer. Her husband died in 1914. She remained in Wakefield, and by 1920, she was living with her daughter Hester. She served as a local “postmistress” for 22 years, and she was an active member of the Methodist church. She died in Meltonsville on November 30, 1931.
