Caleb C. Grigg was born around 1851 in North Carolina to Christopher Grigg and Elizabeth S. Beam. His father was a teacher. The family moved to De Kalb County, Alabama, sometime in the 1850s, and then to Marshall County, Alabama, in the 1860s. He married Sarah Elizabeth Morgan on December 25, 1873, and they had at least nine children: Walter, born around 1875; Mira, born around 1876; Mary, born around 1877; William, born around 1879; Christopher, born around 1881; Bettie, born around 1883; Lorena, born around 1885; Homer, born around 1887; and Caleb, born around 1889.
They lived in Wakefield, Alabama, and Grigg worked as a farmer. By 1880, his wife was suffering from paralysis. His wife died around 1890, and he married Nancy Dunson around 1895. Their daughter Gladys was born around 1895. By 1900, they were living in Langston, Alabama. Nancy died around 1901, and he passed away on June 19, 1929.
