John M. Wilber
John M. Wilber was born around 1845 in Illinois to Robert Wilber and Elizabeth Wood. His father was a farmer who owned $12,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Henry County, Illinois. His father died in September 1860, leaving him $100 in his will. By the early 1860s, Wilber was working as a farmer.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 2, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 77th Illinois Infantry later that day. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with black hair and black eyes. He was killed in battle during the siege of Vicksburg on May 22, 1863.
