opertunity I take this of writeing you a few lines in answer to your very wellcome letter that I recd some time ago I have lots of news to write but I am almost sick so that I will not write but a very few lines I saw the men of the Regt that my brother John belonged to they said that John was shot and killed instantly in making a charge on one of the forts of Vicksburg / we have been in two fights since we left Helena our loss has been very great about two Hundred out of the Regt killed and wounded I must come to a close for my head aches so that I can not stand it give my respects to all the folks when we get Vicksburg I will write and tell you the news good bye for this time
