Samuel Wesley Maurice was born on October 29, 1833, in South Carolina to Robert and Sarah Maurice. His father probably died around 1848. By 1850, he was living with his brother Robert and attending school in Williamsburg, South Carolina. He and his brother enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1855, and he spent the following year studying law.
He married Louisa J. Steele around 1860, and their daughter Sarah was born around 1863. He served in the Confederate artillery during the Civil War and later became a 1st lieutenant in the Ordinance Bureau. He settled in Kings, South Carolina, after the war and worked as a lawyer. By 1870, he owned $3,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. He died in South Carolina on June 24, 1879.
