John Prichard was born around 1808 in Wales. He eventually immigrated to America and settled in New York City. He married a woman name Maria around 1850, and they had at least nine children: Jane, born around 1841; George F., born around 1843; John H., born around 1846; Sarah, born around 1848; Maria, born around 1850; Alfred, born around 1852; Charles, born around 1854; Ida, born around 1855; and Walter, born around 1858. He earned a living as a clerk. The family moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, in the late 1850s, and by 1850, he owned $4,500 of personal property. He moved to Hoboken, New Jersey, in the 1860s, and eventually opened a trunk business with his son John. In the 1890s, he reportedly ‘made several attempts to commit suicide by hanging.” He died in Hoboken on May 27, 1897, after a week-long illness.
