Elizabeth Sproul was born around 1844 in New Jersey to James and Julia Sproul. Her father was a carpenter and farmer who owned $7,000 of real estate and $1,200 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Raritan, New Jersey. She married George Grant around 1862, and they had at least six children: William, born around 1863; Louise, born around 1865; Lewis, born around 1867; Ulysses, born around 1872; Jane, born around 1876; and Josephine, born around 1890. They settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, and her husband worked as a painter. Her husband died around 1907, and by 1910, she was living in her daughter Jane’s household in Mount Vernon, New York. She died sometime after 1920.
