Alice Sproul was born around 1847 in New Jersey to James and Julia Sproul. Her father was a carpenter and farmer who owned $7,000 of real estate and $1,200 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Raritan, New Jersey. She married William H. Walling around 1869, and they had eleven children, including: William, born around 1870; James, born around 1872; Julia, born around 1873; Charles, born around 1875; Elmer, born around 1877; Phineas, born around 1880; Oliver, born around 1884; and Percy, born around 1887.
They lived in Raritan, and her husband worked as a farmer. They moved to Keyport, New Jersey, in the early 1900s, and her husband died around 1912. By 1920, she was living with her sons Charles and Oliver. She owned her own home, and by 1930, it was valued at $5,000. Her health declined in the late 1920s, and by May 1931, she was confined to her bed. She died in Keyport on June 7, 1931.
