Henry Harrison Quickel was born on May 2, 1846, in Pennsylvania to Henry Quickel and Magdalena Strickler. His father was a farmer who owned $4,500 of real estate in 1850. Quickel grew up and attended school in Manchester, Pennsylvania. He remained in his parents’ household until at least 1870. He married Annie Stoner around 1874, and they had at least six children: Edgar, born around 1876; Elmer, born around 1878; Cora, born around 1880; Carrie, born around 1886; Irwin, born around 1890; and David, born around 1892.
They lived in Manchester, and Quickel worked as a farmer. In 1880, they employed at least one white servant. He retired from farming around 1902 and moved to North York, Pennsylvania. On February 14, 1915, he was “looking over some farm implements” in a neighbor’s barn when he “fell through a hay hole and landing eight feet below, fractured his skull.” He died later that day.
