Edward Rensselaer Crafts was born on February 26, 1844, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to Chester Crafts and Olive Day. His father was an inn keeper who owned $9,204 of real estate in 1850. He grew up and attended school in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and by 1860, he was working as a clerk. He married Marion E. Smith in Northampton, Massachusetts, on May 1, 1867, and they had two children: Olive, born around 1868; and Anna, born around 1872.
Crafts worked as a farmer in Holyoke, and by 1870, they owned $300 of personal property. His wife died of diabetes in December 1872. He became postmaster for Ireland Parish in 1872, and he held the position for many years. By 1900, he was living in his mother’s household in Holyoke and working as a mason. By 1920, he was living with his brother Linus and his daughter Anna. He died in Holyoke on May 20, 1923.
