Lucinda Griest was born on September 30, 1846, in Indiana to William and Lydia Griest. Her father was a farmer who owned $4,800 of real estate and $500 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Union, Indiana, until the 1850s, when they moved to Franklin, Indiana. She married Charles Moffitt on August 11, 1867, and they had at least four children: Oliver, born around 1869; Eunice, born around 1873; Arthur, born around 1878; and Herschel, born around 1884.
They moved to Douglass, Kansas, in the late 1860s, and her husband worked as a farmer there. By 1870, they owned $1,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property. They moved to Sugar Creek, Indiana, in the 1870s, and her husband died around 1893. By 1900, Lucinda was living in Rushville, Indiana, with her son Herschel and two boarders. She returned to Franklin, Indiana, in the early 1900s, and by 1930, she was living in Los Angeles, California. She died there on May 5, 1931.
