Joseph H. Prime
Joseph H. Prime was born on October 24, 1841, in Dover, New Hampshire, to Joseph and Mahala Prime. His father died sometime in the 1840s. Prime grew up in New Hampshire, and by the early 1860s, he was working as a shoemaker. He enlisted in the Union army on August 22, 1862, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company F of the 13th New Hampshire Infantry on September 19. According to his service records, he was 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg. He fiercely supported the Union war effort, and he denounced men who refused to enlist as "cowards [who] will not fight for their countrys cause." He celebrated "our once glorious union," and he insisted that "every citizen owes allegiance to the land."

In June 1863, he argued that the "only way" to end the war was to "burn every rebel city and village and show the rebels that we are determined to conquer or die." Prime received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Company G of the 7th USCT Infantry on November 17, 1863. The regiment took part in the siege of Petersburg, and he was wounded on September 29, 1864. He was promoted to captain on November 15, 1864, and he resigned on May 24, 1865.

He married Hannah Snell on September 29, 1862, and they corresponded throughout the war. He returned to New Hampshire after the war, and he applied for a federal pension in August 1865. By 1870, they were living in Barnstead, New Hampshire. He was working as a farm laborer, and his wife was working for a woolen mill. They owned $800 of real estate and $150 of personal property. The couple had no children. He remained in Barnstead for the rest of his life, and he died there of pernicious anemia on October 14, 1911.
