John H. Crewell was born around 1841 in New York to Henry and Eliza Crewell. His father was a farmer. He grew up and attended school in Columbia, New York. He enlisted in the Union army on May 1, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 34th New York Infantry on June 15. He died of disease in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 27, 1862.
